I totally agree with Mayana, Yenny. This is really nice - the ambiguity of that moment is lovely.

I remember very clearly how I felt so removed from both my grandparents' passings - even though they had practically raised me as a child. It was as if the difference in our ages made them another species in my mind - or maybe I just did not have a clear conception of what "forever" really meant? Or maybe - just maybe - since I was still so much closer to birth than death really - I thought it was just natural that they should go.... as natural as that I should be born, and live.

I'm not sure. But the haze of it all is really nice in your piece. Thanks a lot for writing it.

This post really spoke to me. It reminds me of when I lost my grandmother, you summed up the unusual feelings of losing and trying to remember a grandparent beautifully.

Hi! I love your website!

As an editor, I thought you might welcome input on a punctuation rule that is frequently overlooked but that makes a huge impression on publishing professionals when misused:

Periods and commas always fall inside quotation marks. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Hope this is helpful. Now, I invite you to visit my new blog at www.cherilaser.wordpress.com. Please start with the Blog Launch Posting--and then I would welcome your input and comments.

Reminds me of Johnathan Safran Foer's book Incredibly Loud and Extremely Close. The co-protagonist is a Dresden firebombing survivor who worked as a marble sculptor. In America he marries the sister of his dead lover Dresden, and when persuaded to sculpt, finds himself unintentionally creating his lost love.

Since there is nothing physical that makes a Jew a Jew---despite the half-true stereotypes of us---than aren't we all just pretending to be something different when we say we are Jews? In a sense that is what makes the Jew unique in the annals of historically downtrodden people. While others are subjugated based on how they were born, only the Jews have the chutzpah to be a self-made minority, with our own rituals and pageants to celebrate how different we are. So in faking Jewish (and I must admit for bizarre reasons based on yet another set of half-true stereotypes) your family got to the essence of what it takes to be Jewish: the divine hubris of choosing to be different.
